It’s back-to-school season, and while you may not be buying yourself pencils and notebooks this fall, it can still do you some good to step back and see what needs a fresh take at your small business. From your customers’ experience to your office decor, there’s always a few things you can change up around your office space to boost your productivity and performance.

That said, here are a few tips you can use to give your business a leg up this fall to give your company that back-to-business feeling.

  1. Review office sanitation procedures. Fall isn’t only a spooky season because of Halloween; it’s also flu season. The average desk is the home of up to 10 million bacteria and your office phone has more germs than your toilet. If your workplace is making your employees sick, you could be losing valuable business days to preventable sickness. Go over your office’s sanitation procedures with your workers. Make sure that you have signs and posters up reminding your employees to wash their hands, wipe down phones, and keep desks clean.
  2. Narrow down your customer service goals. Up to 72% of businesses say that improving their customer experience is their top priority. But how do you plan on improving your customer experience? Instead of generalizing your business goals this season, narrow down your customer service goals to determine where your customer experience is lacking and where you can improve. When you narrow down your business goals, you can better stay on top of your game because you have a specific target to hit instead of a general idea.
  3. Strengthen your digital security. Consumers’ mistrust of companies’ digital security systems isn’t unfounded. There were 16.7 million victims of identity fraud in 2017 alone and data breaches have become a common fear among businesses since the Equifax breach. It’s a good idea to ensure your business’ digital software has been updated to the most recent versions if you haven’t already. The longer your company uses old software, the easier it is for hackers to access your business’ sensitive information. Make sure that you’re regularly changing your computer passwords to prevent unauthorized access throughout the year.
  4. Reduce your office’s paper waste. While one-third of new paper is made with recycled fiber, reducing your office’s paper waste is not only more eco-friendly, but it can also save your business a lot of money. In fact, up to 17% of everything printed is considered waste. That’s 17% of your business’ paper supply you’re paying for that’s being thrown away. Consider going digital this season by investing in an electronic document management system to organize and store your business’ information. Or, if going completely paper-free isn’t in your wheelhouse right now, reduce your paper waste by using more digital files and fewer paper documents.

By following the tips above, you can get your small business ready to take on the new season by reducing waste, boosting productivity, and improving your organization’s security.
